Learning To Read At South End Infant School:

Great video guides:

Pure Alphabet Sound Pronunciation (a-z)

Still image for this video
In EYFS (Reception), throughout the school and in the UK, children learn to read through synthetic phonics (pure alphabet sounds).
Synthetic phonics is a method of teaching where words are broken up into the smallest units of sound (phonemes). Children are taught how to break up words, or decode them, into individual sounds, and then blend all the way through the word.
For guidance on how we teach sounds (phonemes) and reading, please watch the 3 videos.

Digraphs and Trigraphs

Learning letter combinations which make one sound.
A digraph is two letters which make one sound e.g. ch, sh, th. A trigraph is three letters which make one sound e.g. igh, air, ear.

Blending Sounds (Phoneme Blending)

Blending is the ability to hear the individual sounds in a word, put the sounds together, and say the word that is made.
Listening - These sounds may be said to a pupil - /sss/, /aaa/, /nnn/, /d/ - and the child will say the word “sand”.
Reading - A child will learn to recognise/read letter sounds and put the sounds together to read the word. E.g. the child reads the letters c - a - t and says the word cat.

Learning To Write At South End Infant School:

Children are taught to write in lower case.  Capitals are taught later and/or only used to begin names or to start a sentence.  We will be using a programme called "Kinetic Letters."

Kinetic Letters® material is subject to the normal copyright rules and so must not be copied without permission.
